GRANITE CITY, Ill. (AP) -- Authorities in southwestern Illinois' Granite City are investigating the death of a steel mill worker found dead atop one of the site's furnaces.
Madison County Coroner Stephen Nonn says employees of U.S. Steel's Granite City Works found the body of 56-year-old Dennis Courtaway of Caseyville on Sunday morning.
Nonn says a preliminary investigation indicates that Courtaway knowingly entered a hazardous area containing carbon monoxide without wearing any breathing safety equipment "and with the intent of taking his own life."
The coroner says Courtaway's personal items and a note were found in an office, prompting them to search the site.
An autopsy was planned, along with screenings of Courtaway's blood.
