ST. LOUIS (KMOV) – A man has been charged after admitting to punching a 7-month-old infant and fracturing its skull because it would not go to sleep.

St. Charles prosecutors have charged Christopher DeCou with first degree assault. Police say DeCou admitted to punching baby Anthony in the back of the head when he would not go to sleep, then again when he wouldn’t stop crying.

He was babysitting the child while the child’s mother was at work.

The baby spent six nights at Cardinal Glennon and is expected to make a full recovery.

DeCou is being held in the St. Charles County Jail on $150,000 cash-only bond.

“You never think it's going to happen to your kids and with someone you leave your kids with whom you trust,” says Alicia Skaggs, the child’s mother.

St. Charles County Prosecutor Jack Banas says, “There are places available for people who don't know how to handle a child and get frustrated. They can pick up a phone and take that child to the nursery and have that child taken care of.”

Banas says Crisis Nursery is a great resource for parents or babysitters who feel overwhelmed.
