(BaseballStL) -- St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa did not want to comment about the possibility of Chris Carpenter pitching a possible Game 7 against the Texas Rangers after getting an extra day of rest from the postponement of playing on Wednesday night.
La Russa repeatedly told reporters his focus is on the must-win Game 6. Carpenter has told La Russa he would be ready to pitch Game 7 if called upon.
“It (extra day off) doesn’t mean anything because we don’t know how Game 6 is going to go,” La Russa said. “So we are just going to play Game 6.”
La Russa joked that when the time comes for the Game 7 starter to talk to the media on Thursday, he would send Bob Gibson to talk only because he is not sure who the starter is yet.
La Russa also said Carpenter will not be available out of the bullpen in Game 6 because he does not want to risk injuring the pitcher’s arm on short rest.
Game 7 (if necessary) will be played on Friday night.
