Cardinals fans, we've got the Texas Rangers right where we want them. The Red Birds trail the World Series 3-2 and must win Game 6 to stay alive. Perfect! As a Cardinals fan I would love to already be celebrating our 11th World Championship and not break out in the cold, nervous sweats I'm experiencing. But this is set up as the perfect dramatic ending to this historic run by the Cardinals.
Remember we were 10 1/2 games out of the playoffs in the end of August. We needed the final day of the regular season to make the playoffs. Cardinals won. The reward was the best team in baseball, the Philadelphia Phillies. Remember in that Divisional Series the Cardinals faced elimination and had to win 2 straight games. In Game 4 they faced Cardinal killer Roy Oswalt, who had ended Cards' playoff runs in the past and had never lost to the Cards in the postseason. Cardinals won. Then they faced the daunted Roy Halladay on the road in Philadelphia. Mission impossible, right? Cardinals won. Then we go on to face the Milwaukee Brewers who bested us in the regular season. We went back to Milwaukee knowing we'd have to win the series on the road. Cardinals won.
And let's dig deeper into St. Louis Cardinals history. Five times the Cards had trailed 3-2 in a World Series. Cardinals won 4 of those series.
The most recent was the 1982 World Series when the Cardinals won Game 3 on the road to take a commanding 2-1 lead in the series. The Brewers came back to win Games 4 and 5. I was 1 year old at the time living in West St. Louis County, but I distinctly remember the anxiousness being the talk of my daycare. So the Cardinals came back to Busch Stadium down 3-2 needing to win Game 6. Cardinals won, big (13-1). Then to Game 7. Cardinals won (6-3).
And remember the 2006 World Series. The Cardinals had 2 more home games scheduled when they had rain postpone a game by a day. What happened? Cardinals won. They beat Detroit the next 2 games and won the World Series in the new Busch Stadium.
So you see, as nervous and anxious as we are for this must-win Game 6, history is on our side. Go Cardinals!
