Man dies in Fairview Heights house fire

A man was killed early Tuesday morning by a fire in his Fairview Heights home.

It happened in the 9500 block of Old Lincoln Traill  around 1:45am.

The family of the victim told me at the scene the man who died is 32-year old Cliff Stockton.  He'd lived at the home about eight years.

They had originially been told his 9-year-old daughter was in there with him but were relieved to find out the child was actually staying with her mother.

Firefighters told me they found Stockton near the front door and he was barely alive when they pulled him out.  He ended up dying at the hospital a short time later.

Assistant Fire Chief for French Village Brian Halwachs told me it appears Stockton had been in bed when the fire started and rather than climb out the window right by him, out of habit he tried to make it out the front door.

The state fire marshal is investigating the cause.  As of this morning it was still unclear where in the home the fire started.

The fire appears to be accidental as there are no obvious signs of foul play.
