CLAYTON, Mo. (AP) -- A St. Louis County woman who admitted leaving her newborn daughter in a trash can to die has been sentenced to a year in jail.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that 21-year-old Towanda Rogers will also serve six years' probation under the sentence she received last week. Rogers was originally charged with second-degree murder but pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and endangering the welfare of a child.
Authorities said Rogers gave birth to a daughter she called Akeyla on Christmas Day 2008. The baby was found dead two days later in the trash behind her mother's home, wrapped in a towel and blanket. She had died of hypothermia.
St. Louis County prosecutor Robert McCulloch says Rogers told police she put the baby in the trash thinking she had died.
