ST. LOUIS (AP) -- A St. Louis County man faces sentencing in January after admitting to a phone scam that preyed on the elderly.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that 29-year-old Jerome Mills of Berkeley pleaded guilty Thursday in U.S. District Court in St. Louis. He was involved in a scam in which phone calls were made to elderly people claiming that their children or grandchildren were in a hospital or jail in Mexico, and urging them to send money help.
Federal prosecutors say Mills and others involved in the scam stole or tried to steal $86,000.
It wasn't clear if anyone else has been or will be charged in connection with the case.
