(KMOV) – Stray dogs have become a major concern for residents in St. Louis City, and the city is being more aggressive in its efforts to keep stray dogs off the streets.

St.Louis has given out 180 tickets this year to people letting their dogs run loose. Tickets can cost you up to $200. Those who do not pay could wind up in jail.

The city says if it sees your dog running loose, animal control will take it away.

One woman says the owner of a home in her neighborhood moved out six months ago, but the dogs are still living in the backyard. Because of a broken fence, they’re able to get out and roam.

This is a trend that’s particularly common in north St. Louis.

Just last week, animal control captured 16 loose dogs.
