(KMOV) – Prosecutors in Jefferson County are deciding whether or not to file charges after a rifle bullet hit a woman’s home, just inches away from a large oxygen tank.
A Jefferson County sheriff’s captain says the victim is lucky – the rifle bullet hit a steel entry door, and a few inches to either side could have had a tragic ending.
Diana Dames has lived in her High Ridge home for years and she says she’s heard gunshots from a neighbor’s property on a regular basis but she never expected to be a target.
Dames depends on oxygen around the clock, and at first thought she thought the shot hit a large tank just inside the front door.
Charges in the case appear unlikely. A deputy says neighbors were target shooting with a dirt mound as a backdrop. They believe the stray bullet must have ricocheted.
Jefferson County follows state statutes, which means there’s no minimum amount of land required to fire a weapon.
