(KMOV.com) – Crews with the Illinois Department of Transportation worked to clear ice from highways in the Metro East after sleet and freezing rain hit the area early Sunday morning.
IDOT officials said about a half-inch of ice were in some parts of the Metro East.
"Men and women did a good job overnight," said IDOT spokesperson Joe Morgan. "In places where we saw more sleet and less freezing rain, we've been able to make a little progress."
Morgan said one problem was the temperatures, which were making salt less effective.
"We're hoping we get some sunlight later today," he said. "That's going to bring the temperatures up a bit to help us out."
Morgan said crews would continue to work around the clock to get the roads safe.
