(BaseballStL) --As a 26-year old in the Cardinals organization, Tyler Lyons is sort of the forgotten man when it comes to the starting rotation competition. He did make eight starts a year ago in spot duty and had a 4.75 ERA in the process.
But when it comes to the public perception of the competition, names like Joe Kelly and Carlos Martinez are getting much more attention. Is that something that fuels Lyons' fire?
"In the end it's all the same. If you pitch well you have a chance and if you don't then you don't," Lyons said. "It's not something I concern myself with. It'll play itself out in the end."
Lefty Jaime Garcia is getting an MRI on his problematic left shoulder and could miss a big portion of the 2014 season. That would make Lyons the only lefty aside from prospect Tim Cooney.
That could be an edge in Lyons' favor.
"I don't know. Obviously that's not up to me," Lyons said. "It's out of my control. We don't know what's going to happen with Jaime (Garcia) either way but it's not something I worry too much about. I can' get caught up in that sort of thing."
