(BaseballStL) - Cardinals top prospect OF Oscar Taveras, who is recovering from surgery to repair a high ankle sprain last year, is taking another step in his rehab.
But that doesn't mean he's a lock to be ready to play in the Cards Grapefruit League game on Friday against Jose Fernandez and the Marlins.
"Today he's kicking it up another level which gets him closer to being ready for that Opening Day (of spring) but that's not necessarily one of the goals that I see him have to be a part of (being ready for the first game)," manager Mike Matheny said.
"He has plenty of time to get ready and he's moving forward in a good direction without any limitations," Matheny said.
Taveras missed much of last season with the injury and, had he been healthy, could have been with the Cardinals during their run to the World Series.
He's expected to make his debut at some point in 2014.
