ST. LOUIS -- Missouri’s state auditor says St. Louis Public Schools is making progress, but still has room for improvements.

Auditor Tom Schweich gave the St. Louis Public Schools a “fair” rating in a September 2013 review.

State watchdogs identified several problems, including the promotion of hundreds of students to the next grade level despite having poor reading skills.

During a Thursday news conference, Spence Jackson with the auditor's office said Schweich was please with the progress the district has made since the September audit.

"The Auditor said more work needs to be done in areas like Student Promotion and Retention, MAP Testing and Quality Assurance Monitors," Jackson said. "As you've seen from the follow-up report, they have made some improvements but there's quite a bit of work left to do.”

The auditor’s office conducts follow-up reviews when it issues grades of “fair” or “poor” to the local and state government agencies it monitors.

The Rockwood School District was also given a "fair" grade in its original audit.
