(BaseballStL) -- His nickname was the "Secret Weapon" when he played for the Cardinals in the 1980s and 1990s but nowadays third base coach Jose Oquendo is not much of a secret.

Oquendo works with the Cardinals infielders on a daily basis.  Often he's the first one to arrive and the last one to leave.  That kind of dedication is not lost on those who are around Cards camp.

"I've always said he's one of the best infield instructors I've ever seen," manager Mike Matheny said. "He continues to help guys get better.  He's a real worker.  He has great sense.  He has great knowledge and he loves to work."

"He's amazing," Matt Adams said. "He does a lot of work.  He is very smart at what he does and we're lucky to have a guy like (Oquendo) on our staff.

Oquendo is a large reason why Skip Schumaker was able to become a proficient second baseman back in 2009.  He's the reason why Matt Carpenter became a more than proficient second baseman a season ago.

The secret is out.  Without the Cardinals third base coach there's no telling where this organization would be.
