Can Mizzou fans start talking about Atlanta?

(Missouri Football App) – With five games remaining the Tigers appear to be sitting pretty.

Mizzou leads the conference’s eastern division by two games over South Carolina, Florida, and Georgia. The Tigers also hold the tiebreaker over the Bulldogs and Gators.  For all practical purposes, the division is theirs to lose.

Despite his team’s current position, head coach Gary Pinkel said his team is only worried about its next contest against South Carolina.

"Honestly, I have not looked at the standings. I just know that this is our eighth game this season. That is what we decided to do this year, as we go and focus game by game.” Pinkel said. “We do not care whom we play, and we are going to try to play our best football. We only got twelve shots at this. Our players are aware of one thing, and that is keep playing and good things are going to happen. That is where our focus is at."

A spot in the conference title game (Dec, 7) appears to be staring Missouri straight in the face, but don’t book your trip to Atlanta just yet.

There is still plenty of football to be played in what has been a wild and wacky season in the SEC. In a year in which everyone thought Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina would be fighting for the top spot in the eastern division, injuries and upsets have allowed Mizzou to emerge as the leader.

There have been fewer unexpected results in the west, where Alabama continues to dominate. It looks as if one-loss Auburn is the only team that has a chance to keep the Crimson Tide from reaching the conference title game. Both LSU and Texas A&M, two squads many thought to be Alabama’s biggest intra-divisional challengers, have already lost two SEC games have little hope of a conference championship.

A win over South Carolina would give Missouri a stranglehold on the rest of the SEC East; but the 2013 season has been so topsy-turvy, so full of surprises, that we must not call the SEC East race until it has officially been decided.
