Highland, IL (KMOV.com) – Authorities are searching for the cause of a fire late Sunday evening that sent flames and smoke tearing through a Highland, Illinois business.

Firefighters were called to the Lucco Financial Services building in the 1200 block of Washington Street around 11 p.m.

Flames were pouring out of a rear, second floor window and thick dark smoke venting through the roof as emergency crews arrived on the scene.

No one was injured and it took firefighters less than an hour to bring the fire under control.

Highland Fire Chief Rick Bloemker says the fire started in a second floor restroom and appears to be accidental.

Bloemker tells News 4 the fire spread quickly through the two-story brick building in part because the structure was built with floor trusses rather than floor joists. Bloemker says trusses allow the fire to spread in multiple directions, while solid floor joists used in older construction tend to do a better job of containing the flames.

Bloemker says the rear part of the building suffered the most extensive damage, while the front office area took mostly smoke and water damage.
