(KMOV) -- A 7-year-old boy was killed after a fire swept through a home in Mehlville Monday morning.

Authorities say the boy, his 13-year-old sister and grandmother were sleeping at their home in the 700 block of Hinder Dr. around 12:20 a.m. when it caught fire.

The girl woke up the sound of the fire, got her brother out of bed and they made their way towards the front door. Officials said at some point they got separated in the smoke and the girl made it outside.

The boy, identified as Brian Davis, was later located by firefighters in a bedroom. He was taken from the home on a stretcher and transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities said he most likely passed away from smoke inhalation.

Officials said the grandmother jumped from a second-story window and broke her right heel. She and the girl were treated at St. Anthony’s Hospital and released.

St. Louis County bomb and arson units were investigating the cause of the fire.
