Blind cross country runner inspires classmates

CLOVIS, Calif. -- One of the best cross country runners at a California high school is an inspiration to her classmates -- that's because Heaven Vallejos is blind.

The fourth grader dashes around the track with help from her special education instructor, with whom she has formed a special bond through practices and meets.

Vallejos says competing isn't easy -- but it's worth it.

"It was hard at the beginning when I started cross country, but it's getting easier," Vallejos says.

Her father says he's overjoyed to see his daughter so active.

"It's just brought her so much joy and I see her self determination and she's proud of herself," says Heaven's father, Frank. "I know she is and she's just so happy to be doing something that everybody else is doing."

Heaven says her next goal is to compete in a triathlon.
