(KMOV) -- Several people are out thousands of dollars after a window contractor never did the work they paid for. He now plans to clean up the streets to pay them back.

John Jay Major, the owner of Windows Pro, is accused of stringing people along until they handed over a check for work he would never actually do.

According to the Missouri Attorney General, at least nine customers got nothing after putting down deposits totaling more than $18,000.

Major has an arrest warrant for felony check writing that he says happened after he wrote a bad check in a failed attempt to pay a customer back.

I know I’m in deep crap, I know I’m in deep crap,” Major told News 4’s Chris Nagus. He said the money from the deposits went toward business bills, internet advertising. “I just could keep up.”

He said it was never his intention to rip off anyone, and things just spiraled out of control as debt mounted.

Major told Nagus he made an agreement with the attorney general to pay everyone back, at $800 a month.

When asked how he would get that money, he said, “I’m going to have to Chris if I have to walk down the highway collecting beer cans I got to get the money somehow or I go to jail and nobody gets their money.”

Bottom line, if a contractor asked for a down payment, ask to pay with a credit card so you can dispute the charges if you never seen them again.

In this case, customers asked to do that but were told that had to pay with a check. If you don’t like the terms, find a different contractor.
