Joe Kelly rights ship, gives Cards the chance to win

(BaseballStL) -- Baseball isn't always pretty. Especially pitching. There are days when not all of your pitches are working and you still have to go out there and give your team a chance to win.

Game 1 of the NLCS was one of those days for Cardinals starter Joe Kelly.

"Good pitchers are always able to get it done when they don't have their best stuff and Joe (Kelly) didn't have his best stuff," Mike Matheny said. "He showed signs of it. When he was on the corners he was really good but there were other times when he was battling from behind in the count and he would get too much of the plate. You can't do that to an offense like this."

Kelly shut the Dodgers down for the first two innings despite getting into trouble but gave up two runs in the third on an RBI single from Juan Uribe. Once Carlos Beltran tied it up in the bottom half of that inning, Kelly appeared to calm down and settle in, as if he had just received some new life.

"After you get runs it's always big to try and shut those guys down as quickly as you can," Kelly said. "After we scored I got really excited and just did whatever I could to get the offense right back into the dugout."

He did just that. Kelly threw three shutout innings afterwards and finished with a final line that read: 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 5 K

Not bad for someone lacking their "best stuff" as his manager said while facing one of the most dangerous lineups in the league in the NLCS.
