Matt Adams puts the Cards clinching win out of reach

(BaseballStL) -- They call him "Big City" for his bat. Some call him "Big Kitty" for his soft glove at first base. Whatever you want to call him, Matt Adams has become not just a weapon for the Cardinals down the stretch. He's become the team's cleanup hitter with Allen Craig out.

And he's, no pun intended, cleaning up.

In the decisive Game 5 win over the Pirates, Adams clubbed a huge 2-run home run over the right field wall that took the Cards lead from 3-1 to 5-1 in the blink of an eye. Busch Stadium erupted. The hope of any Pirates comeback was pretty much gone.

"It was just awesome," Adams said. "Getting us a little bit of breathing room, I don't know, I can even put it into words how awesome it was. I'm just happy being able to be in here with these guys being able to celebrate."

"He carried us down the stretch with some big moments for us," Adam Wainwright said. "And that was one of the biggest swings that we could have had right there. (The Pirates) got a couple runners on there in the 9th inning and I got to think they're probably yanking me out of the game if he doesn't put that game out of reach so I appreciate it from my standpoint."

The big man is hitting .316 this postseason after going 2-4 at the plate in Game 5. And with the Dodgers Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke coming to town in the NLCS, the Cardinals are going to need every last bit of help that they can get from Big City.
