CHICAGO (AP) -- An off-duty Chicago police officer has been shot and killed while working as a security guard at a grocery store.
Police say the officer was shot at about 8:30 p.m. Thursday in the Austin neighborhood on Chicago's West Side. Authorities say he was trying to stop a burglary at the store.
The officer was taken to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
One witness tells the Chicago Tribune that he saw someone walk into the store and shoot the officer. Darrell Davis says the shooting happened "so quickly."
No suspects are in custody.
Police are still investigating. Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy was consoling other officers and family members at the hospital.
Residents say it's the second time in recent weeks that the store has been burglarized.
