(KMOV.com) -- A child was killed and four other people, including two children, remain in serious condition after an accident around 1 a.m. Tuesday.
Officials said the accident happened on northbound Interstate 55 near the Interstate 44 split. According to police, it appears the driver lost control of the vehicle and slammed into a concrete highway support.
According to authorities, 13-year-old Kaylan Newberry, of Maryland Heights, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle and the three other passengers were transported to area hospitals.
Northbound I-55 at I-44 was shut down for over two hours while crews worked to clear the accident. Authorities are trying to determine if weather contributed to the accident. Police said the roads were wet, but did not appear icy at the time of the crash. No other vehicles were involved.
