Mechanical problem forces emergency landing at Lambert

(KMOV) -- A flight out of Lambert-St. Louis International Airport made an emergency landing shortly after take off.

The American Airline MD-80 took off from Lambert around 7:30 p.m. Christmas evening and was headed for LAX in Los Angeles when the pilot noticed a mechanical problem.

A representative from American Airlines said the pilot decided to turn the plane around and land back at Lambert. The plane was back on the ground shortly before 8:00 p.m.

Passengers were transported to another airplane and took off at 9:15 p.m. and arrived safely in Los Angeles around 10:52 p.m., Los Angeles time.

The original plane was holding 137 passengers and six crew members.

The mechanical problem has not been determined.
