St. Louis (KMOV) – Police say they shot a man during a traffic stop when they believed he was pulling out a gun on the 3000 block of Pennsylvania Ave in South St. Louis around 8:40 p.m. Friday night.

The suspect was rushed to the hospital and is in critical condition.

Police say three people were in the car when the driver ran a stop sign. Police pulled over the vehicle. The driver and second passenger cooperated but police say the man in the backseat insulted the officer and lied about his identification.

The officer asked the man to step out of the car, that's when the suspect stepped out of the car and reached for his waistband. The officer responded by firing twice at the suspect.

Police are still investigating.
