ST. LOUIS (KMOV) – A 24-year-old man was shot and killed after an attempted drug deal at a fast food restaurant led to a police pursuit, intense crash and shooting in north St. Louis city.
Officials say the incident began in a fast food parking lot at Thekla and Riverview. Police say they saw two males exchanging what they believed were drugs. The officers approached the two men, and one of them reportedly reached for what officers believed was a weapon. The officers then fired shots.
At that point, one of the men drove away, and also tried to run one of the officers down. Police pursued that suspect. During the chase, the police cruiser later crashed into the back of the suspect’s car, causing it to spin out of control. It came to a complete stop at Acme and West Florissant.
When police approached the car, they say they saw the suspect reaching under the seat and say they feared for their safety. It was then that police fired several shots, striking the suspect several times.
Police did find a revolver and drugs inside the vehicle.
The police officer involved was not injured. He has been with the department for four years and is 31 years old. He has been placed on paid administrative leave.
The slain suspect has been identified as Anthony Lamar Smith.
