(KMOV) – St. Clair County hopes to make it harder for scrap metal thieves to sell their goods by getting tougher on scrap dealers.
Earlier this month, a scrap metal dealer in East St. Louis was cited for buying scrap illegally. The law requires that the dealer ask sellers for identification, but undercover officers say they were able to sell the scrap without showing an ID.
Now, the county wants to get even tougher on scrap buyers.
Scrap dealers insist they do try hard to bot buy stolen metals. But prosecutors say they believe dealers know when they are buying illegal scrap.
The hope is that the new ordinance will lead to more arrests, and ultimately, make it tougher for thieves to fence the scrap.
