JUPITER, Fla. - Hoping to work on his slider in a controlled environment, Cardinals lefty reliever Randy Choate faced hitters on the back fields at the Roger Dean Stadium complex and not in the main game.

Due to the infrequency of appearances early in games and the fact that he faced just one hitter in his last outing, Choate requested the extra session so he could get a better feel for his slider. He faced five left-handed hitters on the back fields during a simulated inning Sunday morning.
