( -- St. Louis police have increased patrols at Laclede's Landing this weekend, after two violent crimes less than one day apart raised questions about safety in the popular entertainment district.

The department's mobile command center was set up at 6 p.m. Saturday, and police began to patrol on foot as crowds developed. Hundreds of people who attended the downtown St. Patrick's Day parade were expected to celebrate at local bars.

Last Saturday, a man was shot and critically injured after a verbal altercation outside a bar on Laclede's Landing. Less than 24 hours later, a different argument ended when a man was stabbed in the neck and killed.

Some visitors told News 4 they were happy to see an increased police presence, particularly during the St. Patrick's Day weekend.

"I do feel more safe," said Rachele Bishop, a visitor on the Landing Saturday evening. "I think police need to be down there with drinks and everything. Especially the holiday weekend, there needs to be more police."

Authorities have not said how long they will continue hot-spot policing in the area.
