JUPITER, Fla (Baseball STL) -- With just two weeks left before the Cardinals break camp here in Florida, the number of players on the roster is dwindling by the day. Three more were sent out yesterday, bringing the total number of guys in camp to 45.
It remains to be seen what the Cards decide to do with the composition of their bench, but it's clear they are giving power hitter Matt Adams every chance to win a job. He's hitting .344 in spring training and trails just Shane Robinson and Oscar Taveras for the team lead with eight RBIs. Adams is starting at first base today and batting fifth versus former Cardinal farmhand Dan Haren.
This is also Matt Carpenter's first appearance at third base this spring, his natural position. He's been spending all of his time thus far working on a transition to second base. But Mike Matheny said yesterday he would begin getting work at other positions as well in preparation for the regular season.
Adam Wainwright, the presumptive Opening Day starter, makes his fourth Grapefruit League start this afternoon against the Washington Nationals.
The rest of the lineup is as follows:
1) Jon Jay - CF 2) Daniel Descalso - 2B 3) Matt Carpenter - 3B 4) Ty Wigginton - DH 5) Matt Adams - 1B 6) Shane Robinson - RF 7) Adron Chambers - LF 8) Pete Kozma - SS 9) Rob Johnson - C
Following Adam Wainwright on the mound will be a group consisting of Jason Motte, Randy Choate, Edward Mujica, Fernando Salas, John Gast and Seth Maness.
