(KMOV) – Chesterfield police are investigating two cases of stolen social security numbers used to file fraudulent tax returns.
The IRS says criminals using someone else’s name and social security numbers for tax returns is becoming a massive problem. Once they get the identities, the criminals then e-file and pocket the refund before the IRS or victims know what happened.
The victim’s eventually get their refund, but it’s delayed while they prove their identities to the IRS.
According to the IRS, identity thieves filed 2 million fraudulent returns in 2011, stealing $6.5 billion in the process.
