Savard: NFC West strong and getting stronger

(FOOTBALLStL) -- Sometimes I can't believe how much has changed in the NFC West in two years. Back in 2010, it was quite frankly the worst division I had ever seen. Remember the Rams playing for the division title on the final weekend with a 7-8 record?
Well that division is now one of the best if not the best division in the league. The 49ers were a play away from winning the Super Bowl and the Seahawks came within a play of making it to the NFC Championship. And the Rams? They beat and tied the 49ers. They also beat the Seahawks at home and played the Seahawks to the wire in Seattle where no one wins.
And now the division adds two dynamic playmaking receivers. The Seahawks get Percy Harvin while the 49ers land Anquion Boldin. Both were too pricey for the Rams but they just made new defensive coordinator Tim Walton's job a lot tougher.
There is good news this afternoon. The Rams have re-signed defensive end William Hayes to a three year deal. He was terrific in a reserve role last season recording seven sacks and playing stout run defense. That signing is the equivalent of adding a starter in free agency.
