JUPITER, Fla. – Outfielder Matt Holliday was out of the Cardinals lineup for a third straight day Saturday due to a battle with the flu.
Holliday played Wednesday and hit a two-run homer but was sent home the following morning while dealing with flu-like symptoms. He’s remained home the past three days while dealing with a high fever.
The slugger pulled into the Cardinals parking lot around 10:30 a.m. ET Saturday to presumably meet with team trainers, briefing telling reporters that he didn't plan to work out or do anything while he was there.
“We thought he turned the corner yesterday, the fever broke and then he got it again last night,” said manager Mike Matheny. “Just having trouble kicking this thing.”
Asked what he was dealing with, Matheny said, “Some virus. Some flu virus that is keeping a pretty high temperature. He planned on coming in again this morning and then last night it was up again.”
