(KMOV.com) – A St. Ann detective is still recovering Tuesday night from injuries he suffered during a heroin bust.
Mark Bennett is in the St. Louis County Jail facing assault and drug charges after police say a neighborhood watch volunteer called about a suspicious man in February in a St. Ann neighborhood.
When detectives arrived, they say Bennett tried to drive away. The 43-year-old is accused of putting his car in reverse and slamming into the police car.
The attack on the vehicle injured an officer who remains out of service.
“That police officer is still out with a major concussion,” Said St. Ann Lieutenant Aaron Jimenex. “And actually had a severe sprained right ankle, foot area.”
Police say Bennett had several baggies of heroin hidden in his pants. The suspect is an ex-convict and had been working as a driver for a law firm.
The firm told News 4 Bennett was an independent contractor.
