ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – Crews for the Illinois Department of Transportation demolished the old eastbound Chain of Rocks Canal Bridge on Tuesday.
The demolition took place around 10:35 a.m.
Interstate 270 was closed in both directions starting at 10:15 a.m. Road crews tell News 4 they are closing the interstate so they can make sure the new bridge is not damaged following the demolition.
Crews say the demolition will cause a back-up on the interstate.
Alternative routes include taking the Clark Bridge to the north, the McKinley to the south, or Route 3.
The interstate should be back open by 1:00 p.m.
