ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – Police said a man was shot and killed in north St. Louis around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Authorities said the shooting occurred outside a home in the 5000 block of Cates Avenue. Police said a 34-year-old man, later identified as Leon Rivers, of the 4800 block of Penrose, was found lying in the street with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was taken to a hospital but later died.

An investigation revealed Rivers and a 42-year-old woman were inside a home when 29-year-old Ramon Demery, entered through an unlocked door. Police say the suspect gave instructions to the victims. When the 34-year-old man ran from the residence he was shot by the suspect. That suspect, who has not been identified, was arrested later.

Police said a child called 911 and told police there was a shooting. The child provided authorities with the suspects’ nickname. Police believe Demery and Rivers knew each other.
