ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) –  A St. Louis man has been charged with first degree attempted robbery, resisting arrest and stealing a motor vehicle after leading police on a pursuit around an elementary school in the Fox C-6 district on Thursday morning.

The pursuit began after Yale Dierker, 23, allegedly stole a Pier 1 employee’s purse in Gravois Bluffs. According to the robbery victim, Dierker implied he had a gun by threatening to shoot her if she did not give him her purse.

Following the robbery, Dierker took an AraMark delivery truck that was located nearby.

When police arrived at the robbery scene, they saw the truck pulling onto Highway 141 and pursued the vehicle onto the parking lot of Guffey Elementary School.

A tow truck driver saw the police pursuit and attempted to stop the stolen vehicle using his truck, Dierker's vehicle then smashed into the tow truck.

The driver of the tow truck, Conrad Miner, says he spotted the car driving quickly through the elementary school parking lot and knew he had to help police, who he saw were pursuing the vehicle. Miner says he blocked the exit of the school so Dierker couldn't escape.

"He pulled into a school and, if my kids were attending school there, I would want someone to do the same thing," Miner said. "It's an elementary school. There are children back there. If someone gets hurt, it's a tragedy. The truck can be replaced. Their children can't."

Dierker attempted to run from police after the crash forcing an officer to use his department issued Taser to gain custody of him.

Dierker was taken into custody without further incident.

As the pursuit was taking place, Guffey Elementary School was placed on lockdown. The lockdown lasted roughly 10 minutes.

No students or staff were in any direct danger during the pursuit, the school said.

Following the pursuit, the entrance to the Guffey campus was blocked by emergency vehicles.
