PACIFIC, Mo. (KMOV.com)- St. Louis County Police are searching for a Pacific grandmother charged with child endangerment after her six year-old grandson found a loaded gun in her home and accidentally shot himself.

The six year-old was watching television with siblings in the back bedroom of his grandmother's home when he discovered a loaded gun on top of a tall dresser. The children's grandmother, 59 year-old Cheryle Spaeth, was in the shower when the boy accidentally shot himself in the thigh.

The six year-old has fully recovered from injuries.

A felony charge of first degree endangerment of child welfare has been filed against Spaeth. Police say it's not very often that they get calls for accidental shootings due to an unattended firearm, but want to remind gun owners to lock up weapons in a safe when they're not in use.

"If your children know you have guns, maybe sit them down and talk about gun safety with them and how important it is to not touch the guns themselves," says Officer Shawn McGuire.
