ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – Authorities have tips on how drivers can avoid becoming the victim of the latest carjacking crime trend.

Authorities say there have been two recent incidents where drivers had their cars stolen after a minor traffic accident. Police say the suspect vehicle “bumps” the victim’s vehicle, then when the driver exits his vehicle it is stolen by the suspect.

To avoid becoming a victim of the crime trend, County police advise anyone who gets into an accident to notify them first. Police say the majority of calls they receive are for traffic accidents so drivers should always notify authorities of the accident.

Police also suggest moving the vehicle to a well-lit area to make it more visible.

“Anytime you can make yourself, to lessen the chance of becoming a victim by having more witnesses that’s what we want to see,” said St. Louis County Police Sgt. Brian Schellman.

Lastly, police say it is a good idea to stay inside of a vehicle if a minor traffic occurs.
