KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -- Police are searching for the person who shot and killed an infant and injured his mother during a drive-by shooting.

Balethia Washington says she had just stepped inside her home in the 2700 block of North Early Street about 10:30 p.m. Sunday. Within three minutes someone started firing.

She says the shooter knew she and her 7-month-old son, JaQuail Mansaw, were inside.

Washington said six children were inside the home at the time of the shooting. JaQuail was watching his favorite cartoon.

"I picked him up. I was trying to protect him," Washington said.

A bullet hit the infant, who later died at the hospital from his injuries. Washington suffered minor injuries.

"This has got to stop. This was my baby, my last baby. I can't have any more kids. I'm asking you to come together ... someone come forward please, for my baby," Washington said.

"He was a happy, sweet living baby. He kept a smile on his face. He just got his first three teeth. Happiest baby ever, and you all took him from me," she said.

Whoever fired the gunshots put many people in danger.

"Whoever did this was a coward. I'm asking you all to come forward and let me know who did this," Washington said.

At this time it is not clear whether this was a random shooting or whether the house was targeted. Police do not have a suspect description.

JaQuail's parents do not have insurance and are asking for any help for burial and other expenses. To donate, click here.
