WARRENTON, Mo. (KMOV.com) - Operation Backpack in Warrenton, a program that feeds kids on weekends thanks solely to food and money donations, has doubled in size since the beginning of the school year.
With families struggling financially and the population in the area growing, donations are needed more than ever.
"Some of our single parents are working minimum wage jobs or two jobs and it's just not enough," says Marilyn Carter of Operation Backpack.
Carter also says that many of the children are not from what is considered a needy family and that many are from middle income families, but with a parent that may have been laid off or struggling with health issues.
When donations are up, the program can feed kids for weeks, but when donations are down the program is forced to make adjustments.
"Sometimes we don't have vegetables to give to kids, so we'll give them an extra cereal," says Carter. "It's based on what we've got."
If you would like to help out Operation Backpack food donations can be dropped off at the Warren County R-III Central Office at 385 Veterans Memorial Drive in Warrenton, Mo. Checks can be made payable to "Operation Backpack".
