ST. LOUIS (AP) -- A long-dormant St. Louis nightclub has been named one of the country’s most endangered historic buildings.

The Palladium opened 100 years ago as a roller rink. It was later home to a jazz club and dance hall featuring artists such as Nat King Cole and Ella Fitzgerald under the name Club Plantation.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports the National Trust for Historic Preservation has designated the building as a threatened, culturally significant site. The vacant building is surrounded by property recently purchased by the federal government for a planned $430 million expansion of the nearby John Cochran VA Hospital.

The building later held a variety of bars after Club Plantation closed but has been vacant since a thrift store left nearly four years ago.
