(BaseballStL) – In a huge blow to the St. Louis Cardinals rotation, the Cardinals announced after Sunday’s game they’re going to be placing both Jaime Garcia and Michael Wacha on the disabled list. The starting pitchers are dealing with slightly different shoulder injuries.
Garcia’s issue is directly related to the problems he’s been dealing with for the last couple years. The lefty attempted to throw a bullpen session today and it apparently did not go well.
As for Wacha, he was a bit of a surprise.
“There is a stress reaction in the shoulder and based on what the doctors are telling me they think it’s in his best interest to shut down for a little bit,” GM John Mozeliak said. “In terms of how long he’ll be out I don’t know that.
“It’s disappointing to learn about this but (Wacha’s) too young and too valuable to risk (messing around with),” Mozeliak said.
As for who is going to replace them in the starting rotation, Carlos Martinez will remain a starter and take Wacha’s spot – made easier because he started in place of him Sunday. But the Cards are now in need of a starter for Wednesday when Garcia was supposed to throw. They also have to make two roster moves to accommodate both players’ transition to the DL.
Joe Kelly is not quite ready to return from his hamstring strain. He figures to get that spot upon his arrival. But until then the Cardinals will have to find someone else, possibly from AAA.
