ST. LOUIS (AP) -- New figures from the city of St. Louis show that the number of homeless people in the city is on the decline.
KMOX Radio reports that a city count released Friday showed 1,328 homeless. The count was based on a check of 50 sites on one day in January. The figure is down 7 percent from last year.
Director of Human Services Bill Siedhoff says about 70 percent of homeless interviewed said they had been diagnosed with mental illness.
Siedhoff says the number of long-term, chronically homeless people is down 20 percent to 112. He says the city spends about $14 million annually in grants to help the homeless on the streets, and another $4,000 for homeless in supportive housing.
