(KMOV.com) – Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon told News 4 the state’s takeover of the Normandy School District will improve the quality of the education it provides.

The state of Missouri will take over the district, which lost its accreditation, July 1. The state will be hiring teachers and staff from scratch, which means teachers who already work there must re-apply for their jobs.

“I think that we are committed in the long run to improve schools and that every kid, no matter where they live, has an equal opportunity,” Nixon said.

Under the new plan, the current superintendent will keep his job. Nixon said state education officials will make decision with local input.

Normandy students who had transferred to other districts can attend the school in which they transferred to, however, officials recently placed new limits on transferring to save costs.
