Mozeliak: Skipping Wainwright's start is precautionary

(BaseballStL) -- Prior to Saturday's game, general manager John Mozeliak confirmed the Cardinals would skip Adam Wainwright's start Monday as a precautionary measure after the ace suffered elbow discomfort last week.

"He did throw [Saturday] inside, and based on how he feels we will skip his start on Monday," Mozeliak added. "I think this is more precautionary than anything else. It was something we just didn't want to push if we didn't have to and he agreed with that."

Mozeliak said the team did expect Wainwright would get back on schedule with his following start Saturday, June 21.

"He said he felt improved," Mozeliak continued, "but he understood that this was the best decision."

The next question, who takes Wainwright's start Monday? Mozeliak said the Cardinals had no plan to throw Michael Wacha a day earlier, since the Redbirds had an off day Thursday. Instead, he said the player had yet to be contacted about the start.

"Monday's starter is TBD," Mozeliak said, "We're going to keep that day-to-day and just see how the next couple of days unfold."

One potential candidate, lefty Tyler Lyons is scheduled to throw Saturday night in Triple-A Memphis, so he is out as a possibility.

Tim Cooney is prime selection. Cooney threw 6.0 scoreless innings last Monday, allowing just five hits.

Zach Petrick, who was a possibly call up when Joe Kelly went down, also has a chance to be called up. Petrick gave up four runs in 4.1 innings last Tuesday.
