(BaseballStL) -- It’s been several weeks now since Joe Kelly tried that bunt for a hit which resulted in a partial tear of his hamstring and subsequently shelving him for an extended period of time. At first there was very little evidence that his hamstring was recovering.
Now it appears things are finally moving in the right direction.
Kelly’s been playing catch and even running – albeit slowly – for a couple days. That doesn’t mean his return to St. Louis is imminent. However it does mean they can project some sort of return.
“I don’t know if I’m ahead of schedule because I’ve been playing catch but there’s just a big difference between playing catch and throwing off a mound,” Kelly said. “I don’t know how close I am. I’ve just thrown twice and jogged a few times. Nothing really strenuous or anything.”
GM John Mozeliak says he isn’t sure if Kelly will be able to return by the end of the month but he’ll “definitely” be back by July. The issue of where he goes once back on the active roster remains to be seen based on team need.
Kelly could be headed to the bullpen or – if an injury pops up – he could be a member of the rotation once again.
