Local county considering push to hire veterans

Posted: Updated:

(KMOV.com) – St. Charles County may start a program to put veterans back to work.

The St. Charles County Council is debating a bill that would create a 12-person committee knows as the “Veteran Best Practices Working Group” which would come up with ways to try to get the word out to veterans about jobs openings.

The proposal would also create a position within the county’s government called “Veteran Coordination and Recruitment,” and would increase county involvement with military job fairs and establish relationships with Scott Air Force Base and Fort Leonard Wood.

“This is not a hiring preference. They will still be judged on their merits and what we think they can do as an employee of the county, but it's an effort to reach out and make sure they know the opportunities are there,” St. Charles County Executive Steve Ehlmann said. “Make sure once they're hired here that somebody who's been in a similar situation can help them make the adjustment to civilian life."

Ehlmann said he hopes the county council will pass the bill at the next meeting.
