(KMOV) – Preparing your taxes doesn’t have to cost a lot. If you earn $49,000 or less, you can have your tax return prepared for free.

During tax season, the fellowship hall at the New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church becomes a tax prep office where the experts prepare state and federal returns and e-file them for free. The refunds come back within a week or two, at most.

“They don’t have to pay all of that money, they deserve all of their refund to be returned to them and not have to give that to someone else,” says Sonja Worth of the Center for Economic Progress.

The church site is one of dozen tax preparation centers in the area. Many are coordinated by the nonprofit Gateway EITC Community Coalition, which trains volunteer preparers to handle most types of returns. Most sites do not require an appointment and are first come, first serve.

The clinics have gotten busier over the last couple of years as more people now fall under the $49,000 income requirement.
