ROXANA, IL (KMOV.com) -- Two children are dead following a fire that engulfed a multi-unit apartment building in Roxana, Illinois.

The fire broke out just after midnight Sunday morning at a triplex in the 100 block of East Third Street.

Firefighters arrived on the scene to find the home filled with smoke.  They learned two small children were trapped inside.  Firefighters made several attempts to enter the building, but were pushed back by the heat.

The two young victims have been identified as 5-year-old Sky N. Gresham and 6-year-old Jason M. Gresham .

The mother of all three children, Tiffany N. Gresham, age 26, was present in the house at the time of the fire along with her boyfriend, Michael J. McCarthy, age 25.  They were able to get the six week old baby girl out of the house but could not reach the other children.

McCarthy suffered burns to his hands and face attempting to rescue the other children.  McCarthy and the six week old girl were treated and released at Alton Memorial Hospital.
